Normann Copenhagen Storage Pockets

There has been something of a storage revolution going on in the last few decades. There was a time when storage was either shelving, uniform length, plain wood on a wall, and rather dull, or plastic boxes that were filled and then whisked up into a loft (if you had one) or under the bed. It seems that we just seem to acquire more and more “things” and need more storage space to display them or hold them. Is there a way of combining style and storage? You bet!
I have redesigned my hallway/passage using “wall pockets” from a particular Danish design brand known as Normann Copenhagen. My hall is long and stretched from the front door all the way past a sitting room and a dining room, ending towards the rear of the house where the stairs and kitchen are. It’s not a bad hall, but no matter how I decorate it, it always seems to be featureless and boring. A tedious walk from the front to the back of the house. I have tried long stretches of shelves with books on them, but that just seems to accentuate the hallway’s length, while the light isn’t really good enough to enable one to browse the reading material. That was then and this is now. My hall is now broken up with a number of pockets; little pouches of different sizes, colours and designs. Like a bulging over-large shirt pocket, only much more chic.
The Normann Copenhagen Pocket Organizer was and continues to be designed by Simon Legald who had a great idea; the Pocket- a versatile and decorative storage solution inspired by a bulging shirt pocket. Pockets come in four different sizes, is made of plastic and can be used in any area of the home where extra storage is needed. It is wall-mounted with a sliding bracket so it is easy to lift off the wall for regular cleaning. Colours range from White, Black, Light Grey, Dark Green, Spicy Orange and Golden Yellow – and so can be colour co-ordinated with a particular room’s décor, or better still scattered randomly along a wall in all the different colours to create a real abstract delight for you and those seeing them for the first time. Naturally the versatility of the pockets is paramount; you can use them for almost anything- magazines, makeup items, pens & pencils, keys, the dog’s leash, air-freshener, mobile phone, headphones, plants, even a battery radio.
The idea of the pocket was simplicity itself. To make a flexible wall-mounted storage solution for all of the smaller items that you never know where to put. By using the walls you can make the most of the space you have available. And hallways were just made to go hand-in-hand with pockets! The different sizes of Pocket mean that it can easily be adapted to suit individual needs and will work in homes of all different shapes and sizes.
How did it all come about?
Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen teamed up to create the Normann Copenhagen brand in 1999 with a vision to make a difference in the design industry. Within five years, more than 38 products had been designed and produced, as well as collaborations with established design names and new talents from around the world.
In 2009 Normann Copenhagen introduced their first furniture pieces and there seems to no slowing down in their eagerness to offer us new and exciting designs in a variety of colours and materials. But for me it will always be their storage pockets that I like the best!
